JACKSON, Tenn. — Nov. 20, 2002 — ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ Universityβs Department of Music is bringing a new Christmas tradition to the Jackson and West Tennessee community with the introduction of βA ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ Christmas,β which will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3 in the G. M. Savage Memorial Chapel.
Richard Joiner, chair of the music department, hopes that this program will become a popular staple every year. In his first year at ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅, Joiner joined the ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ community this past August after a twenty-year career at Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss.
βWe want it to be a campus-wide celebration, but we would also like to see it become a tradition in the community, where our guests would expect a worshipful setting, great music and outstanding performances of classics as well as carols,β said Joiner.
The celebration will offer performances by the Symphonic Band, Childrenβs Choir, Choral ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅, University Singers and Proclamation. Musical selections include "Christmas Cantata" by Daniel Pinkham, and "Fantasia on Christmas Carols," by Ralph Vaughan Williams which will both be performed by the Choral ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ with brass ensemble. Traditional carols will be sung by both the choirs and the congregation. In addition, passages of scripture will be read by various members of ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅βs faculty and staff, following the structure of the standard English lessons and carols service.
