JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 31, 2001 — Former dean and retired Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University history professor James A. Baggett, author of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University's recently released 175-year history, So Great a Cloud of Witnesses, will give book-signings at two Jackson bookstores, Monday, Feb. 5.
Earlier in the day, Baggett will be honored at the university's annual
Founder's Day service.
"The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ family owes Dr. James A. Baggett a huge expression of gratitude for his careful research and illuminating volume, which provides the most significant telling of the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ story ever produced," said Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ President David S. Dockery. "We look forward to this opportunity to recognize him for his outstanding work that will serve the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ family well for years to come."
The book, which spans the years from 1823 - 2000, explores the variety of influences and characters that helped lead Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to its current role as a leader in Christian higher education, including the major influence of the university on the city of Jackson.
A Georgia native, Bagget earned two degrees from Texas Wesleyan College and received his Ph.D. from North Texas State University. He has been a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow, a Mellon fellow, and a Danforth associate.
Baggett, who has also authored a history on the Jackson Clinic, will
sign copies of the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ history at 2 p.m. at Lifeway Christian Bookstore
on Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's campus and at Davis-Kidd Bookstore from 5 to 7 p.m.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University is the oldest education institution in Southern Baptist
life.
