JACKSON, Tenn. — Nov. 22, 2019 — ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅βs Department of Music will offer two Christmas concerts this holiday season that are free and open to the public: Handelβs βMessiah,β Dec. 3, and the annual ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ Christmas concert, Dec. 6.
Two ensembles from the Department of Music, the University Singers and the University Symphony Orchestra, will be featured in the βMessiahβ concert on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 7:30-9 p.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. βMessiahβ is a beloved, historic piece of music telling the story of Christβs life that has been performed through the centuries.
βIt should be a wonderful time to commemorate in a historic context the birth of Christ through music and song and Scripture,β said John Kinchen, chair of the Department of Music and director for choral activities.
The Department of Music will continue its tradition of the annual ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ Christmas by presenting an evening concert of contemporary Christmas favorites performed by ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅βs choral ensembles (including Sounds of Exaltation, Voices of Proclamation, the University Singers, Jubilate and the ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ Gospel Singers) and the full symphony orchestra on Friday, Dec. 6, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. The concert will also include congregational singing and a candle-lighting portion.
βThe opportunity that we have to gather together in the name of Jesus Christ is always an important part of who we are as an institution and reaching into our community,β Kinchen said. βWeβre part of the community here, and we want to invite folks to be a part of what this is as a meaningful part of their celebration of Christmas.β
