Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will remember past with dedication of history book at annual Founders' Day celebration

JACKSON, Tenn.Jan. 19, 2001Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University will remember and recognize more than 175 years of history for the university in a special Founders' Day service Monday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel.

An annual event for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, this year's observance will include a dedication of the recently released history So Great a Cloud of Witnesses by former dean and retired history professor James A. Baggett.

"The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ family owes Dr. James A. Baggett a huge expression of gratitude for his careful research and illuminating volume, which provides the most significant telling of the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ story ever produced," said Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ President David S. Dockery. "We look forward to this opportunity to recognize him for his outstanding work that will serve the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ family well for years to come."

Founders' Day speaker will be Timothy George, dean and professor of divinity at the Beeson Divinity School at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. A prolific author of more than 20 books and a regular contributor to scholarly journals, George currently serves as senior editor for Christianity Today and on the editorial advisory boards of The Harvard Theological Review, Christian History, and Books & Culture.

Baggett, who has also authored a history on the Jackson Clinic, will sign copies of the book at two different book signings on Monday. The first will be held at 2 p.m. at Lifeway Christian Bookstore on Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's campus and the second will take place at Davis-Kidd Bookstore from 5 to 7 p.m.

An annual university event that was established in 1999, Founders' Day provides the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ community the opportunity to continually celebrate its long and rich heritage of providing a liberal arts education in a Christian context. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is the oldest institution of higher education associated with the Southern Baptist Convention.
