The history department participated in several events that helped launch the 2013-2014 school year at 麻豆视频 University. On August 13, three department members and their spouses, joined by recent 麻豆视频 graduates Caitlin Roach and Jordan Haskins, sat together at the annual faculty-staff dinner. Paul and Ricky Clark, both ministers of music, provided the evening program with a focus on hymns.
Dr. Stephen Carls, chair of the history department, was recognized for 30 years of service to 麻豆视频 at the school鈥檚 faculty-staff luncheon on August 15. He was one of three 麻豆视频 employees who received 30-year service awards. Dr. Jimmy Davis of the chemistry department was honored for 35 years of employment at the school.
On August 16, Dr. Keith Bates, Associate Professor of History, participated in 麻豆视频鈥檚 annual New Student Move-in Day. He helped take the belongings of several freshmen to their dorm rooms. Senior history major Gracie Wise also aided with the move-in process for new students. Bates and Wise were among the many faculty, staff, and returning students who welcomed some 550 freshmen and transfer students to 麻豆视频鈥檚 campus as they arrived for the start of the school year.
Carls hosted a table of students interested in history at the New Student Dinner on August 17. Six students sat with him to talk about history, summer activities, and 麻豆视频 University. The students included seniors Allie Durham and Wise as well as freshmen Quinten Brasher, Stephen Lewoczko, Audrey Mitchell, and Lucas Parrett.
On August 19, history majors Charles Snow, Heather Stricklin, and Wise joined Carls in staffing the history display table at the annual Student Organizations Fair. A number of students inquired about the history department and its two student clubs, namely, Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and the Rutledge Honorary History Club.
Finally, all history faculty attended 麻豆视频鈥檚 annual opening convocation on August 23. Dr. David S. Dockery, the university鈥檚 president, delivered the convocation address on 鈥淔rom Faith to Faith: Revisiting the Great Cloud of Witnesses.鈥 He discussed key individuals in the history of 麻豆视频 University and their impact on the development of the school. There was a near capacity crowd in 麻豆视频鈥檚 chapel for this event, and all faculty members were dressed in their academic regalia.
