Phi Alpha Theta Group Attends Regional Conference in Nashville

A group of six 麻豆视频 University faculty members and students attended the Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Belmont University in Nashville on February 23, 2013. Some 85 people from across the state and beyond participated in the conference which featured Dr. Richard Blackett, the Andrew Jackson Professor of History at Vanderbilt University, as the luncheon speaker. Professor Blackett talked about 鈥淕oing into the Belly of the Beast: The Underground Railroad and the Attack on Slavery.鈥

Three 麻豆视频 Phi Alpha Theta student members presented papers. They and their paper titles were: Patricia Dawson, 鈥淭he Weapon of Dress: Identity, Acculturation, and Self Image in Cherokee Clothing, 1794-1838;鈥 Jeffrey Lewoczko, 鈥淭raining to 鈥淲in: The Army Air Corps Flight Training during World War II;鈥 and Mary Ellen Poe, 鈥淭he Desegregation of the Public Schools in Jackson, Tennessee.鈥 Each of their presentations was extremely well received by those who were at their panels.

Two of the 麻豆视频 University faculty members attending the conference served as panel chairs. Dr. Terry Lindley presided over a panel titled 鈥淭he United States in World War II鈥 and commented on each of the three papers that comprised his session. Also acting as a chair was Dr. Henry Allen, who commented on three papers in a panel called 鈥淭he Progressive Era in the United States.鈥 Dr. Alice-Catherine Carls of the University of Tennessee at Martin, who traveled with the 麻豆视频 University contingent to the conference, served as a chair for a panel called 鈥淐oncepts of Power in the Atlantic Revolution.鈥

The third history faculty member from 麻豆视频 at the conference was Dr. Stephen Carls who represented Phi Alpha Theta national headquarters in a brief talk at the conference luncheon. He congratulated Dr. Cynthia Bisson, the conference coordinator, for the fine work she did in organizing the event, and he thanked all those who attended for helping make the conference a success. He also talked about the 2014 Phi Alpha Theta Biennial Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the Phi Alpha Theta online merchandise store. The luncheon was the last official conference activity.
