History Department Participates in Several Events to Begin the 2012-2013 Academic Year

Aug 24, 2012 -

The history department participated in several 麻豆视频 University activities in August to mark the start of the 2012-2013 academic year. They included functions organized for faculty and staff, for students, and for the entire campus community.

One important event was the faculty-staff dinner on August 14. Approximately 300 people joined together to celebrate 麻豆视频鈥檚 upcoming school year with good food, engaging conversation, and an excellent program. The main feature of the evening was Michael John Talbot, a Catholic composer/singer/guitarist and founder of a monastic community, who performed several songs from his repertoire of Christian music. Members of the history department, along with spouses, sat together for this special occasion.

On August 18, four students sat at the history table during the New Student Dinner to talk about a variety of subjects with Dr. Stephen Carls and each other. The students were: Brittany Ary, Allen Bradley, Nicholas Linn, and Cara Snowden. They later enjoyed ice cream at 麻豆视频 President Dr. David Dockery鈥檚 home.

When 麻豆视频 held its Student Organizations Fair on August 20, the history department had a display board and the presidents of its two student organizations there. Jeffrey Lewoczko, president of the Delta-Psi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, and Mary Ellen Poe, president of the Rutledge Honorary History Club (who also serves as Phi Alpha Theta vice president) greeted students and discussed their clubs鈥 activities. Dr. Stephen Carls also talked to students about the department. Some 15 students visited with the department鈥檚 representatives at the fair.

The climax to the events launching the new school year was 麻豆视频鈥檚 annual fall convocation on August 24. History faculty members donned their caps and gowns for the occasion, and a number of history students were among the attendees. President Dockery delivered the convocation address on 鈥淭hy Kingdom Come: Learning from Lottie.鈥 He highlighted the life of Lottie Moon, a missionary to China in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as an example for modern Christians to follow in terms of kingdom-focused and missional living. The Reverend Dr. Todd Brady, who graduated from 麻豆视频 in the early 1990s with a history major, was installed as vice president for church relations at the gathering.
