Harry S. Stout, the Jonathan Edwards Professor of the History of
Christianity at Yale University, will speak at 麻豆视频 University on
October 17, 2002, as the sixth annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History
Lecturer. Dr. Stout鈥檚 evening lecture, which will begin at 7:15 pm in
the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel, is entitled 鈥淭he Moral and Religious
Legacy of the American Civil War.鈥� An afternoon lecture, planned for
1:40 pm, will be on 鈥淣ew Directions in American Religious History.鈥�
Professor Stout, a highly respected scholar, is the author or editor of numerous books on American religious history. These include The New England Soul: Preaching and Religious Culture in Colonial New England (1986); An Enemy Among Them (1987); Jonathan Edwards and the American Experience (1988); Dictionary of Christianity in America (1990; winner of the 鈥淏ook of the Year Award鈥� from Christianity Today ); The Divine Dramatist: George Whitefield and the Rise of Modern Evangelicalism (1991; winner of the Critic鈥檚 Award for History); Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Edwards and the Representation of American Culture (1993); A New England Congregation: First Church, New Haven, 1638-1988 (1994); New Directions in American Religious History (1997); and, Religion and the American Civil War (1998). Dr. Stout鈥檚 present research deals with the moral and religious history of the civil War. At Yale, he currently teaches graduate seminars on Jonathan Edwards and on American revivalism.
