Eleven History People Attend the Phi Alpha Theta 2010 Biennial Convention in San Diego

Jan 9, 2010 - Six 麻豆视频 University history students and five history faculty members attended the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society 2010 Biennial Convention in San Diego, California on January 6-9. The six students presented papers at the convention, and three of the faculty members served as panel chairs/commentators. All 麻豆视频 participants enjoyed the several meals served as a part of the convention schedule. Dr. Jack Tunstall, the executive director of Phi Alpha Theta, recognized Dr. Stephen Carls, 麻豆视频鈥檚 Delta-Psi Chapter faculty advisor, with an Outstanding Service Award at the Presidential Banquet for Dr. Carls鈥檚 many contributions to Phi Alpha Theta over the past 27 years. In all, more than 500 people attended the convention.

The six students who attended the convention, along with the titles of their papers, were: Noah Arnold, 鈥淢aking Waves: The Steamboat 鈥楤loomer鈥 and Alabama鈥檚 Deepening Engagement in the Civil War;鈥 Elizabeth Blevins, 鈥淭he Evolution of States鈥 Rights as Reflected in America鈥檚 Foundational Documents;鈥 Kate Cline, 鈥淣apoleon鈥檚 Military Victories: Bicentennial Celebrations and Reenactments;鈥 Charles Googe, 鈥淭he Role of the 14th West Virginia Infantry Regiment in the Civil War;鈥 Micah Snow, 鈥淐omposing the Revolution: Music鈥檚 Role in Revolutionary France;鈥 and Cameron White, 鈥淢emphis and the Civil War.鈥

Among the faculty, Dr. Keith Bates chaired and commented for a panel called 鈥淭he Reformation,鈥 Dr. Carls oversaw sessions on 鈥淚deology in Warfare鈥 and 鈥20th Century Europe,鈥 and Dr. Judy LeForge led sessions titled 鈥淐hanges in the Images of Women鈥 and 鈥淲omen Pushing the Boundaries.鈥 In addition, Dr. Carls chaired a faculty panel on 鈥淚mproving Your Chapter.鈥 麻豆视频鈥檚 Dr. David Thomas and Dr. Alice-Catherine Carls from the University of Tennessee at Martin also attended the conference as members of the faculty team from Jackson, Tennessee.

The 麻豆视频 group also did several activities beyond the convention. On Wednesday evening (January 6), they ate dinner at the Old Town Mexican Caf茅, an award-winning restaurant in an historic part of San Diego. On Saturday (January 9), many spent a part of the morning at Mission Bay Beach on the Pacific Ocean near their hotel. They braved the cold ocean water to face the walls of waves that chased them from the sea. The weather was ideal for this experience as temperatures were mild and there was lots of sun. Later, the group visited the USS Midway Museum, where they saw many parts of the retired aircraft carrier and a number of airplanes that at one time or another were a part of the carrier鈥檚 weaponry. The group then had a late lunch at The Fish Market Restaurant located near the museum. Group members spent the remainder of the day exploring San Diego on their own.

As the group traveled back to Tennessee on January 10, they spent much time talking to each other about the conference and their experiences in California. After their plane landed in Nashville, they traveled by van back to 麻豆视频鈥檚 campus where the trip officially ended with their arrival shortly before 8:30 p.m.
