Feb 28, 2009 - History majors Joshua Abbotoy, Kathleen Cooper, and Hannah Holliday presented papers at the Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville on February 28, 2009. Hannah was one of seven presenters out of a total of forty-nine at the conference to win a Best Paper Award; her paper was entitled 鈥淎 Refusal of Reform: Georgia Baptists and Integration.鈥 Joshua presented a paper on 鈥淭he Patriarch Athanasius, His Attempted Reforms, and Their Ideological Roots,鈥 and Kathleen dealt with a Negro League baseball team in her paper about 鈥淭he Memphis Red Sox: Barely Hanging On, 1947-1960.鈥 All three papers were well received at the conference, with attendees praising the students鈥 research and writing skills as well as the originality of their work.
History department members Dr. Keith Bates, Dr. Stephen Carls, and Dr. Judy LeForge accompanied the students to Clarksville. Drs. Bates and LeForge served as panel chairs/commentators, while Dr. Carls, a member of the Phi Alpha Theta National Advisory Board, presented greetings from Phi Alpha Theta Executive Director Dr. Jack Tunstall and announcements from the national office during the conference luncheon. The luncheon speaker was Dr. Ted Ownby, Professor of History and Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi, who talked about 鈥溾橣ree Bird,鈥 Roots, and Family Values: Southern Culture in the 1970s.鈥
Approximately 120 people attended the conference, with students and faculty from the following colleges and universities participating as paper presenters or panel chairs/commentators: Austin Peay State University; Belmont University; Lee University; Lipscomb University; Maryville College; Middle Tennessee State University; Murray State University; Rhodes College; Tennessee State University; 麻豆视频 University; University of Memphis; University of Tennessee, Chattanooga; University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and the University of Tennessee, Martin. Dr. Minoa Uffelman, faculty advisor to the Phi Alpha Theta chapter at Austin Peay State University, served as the conference coordinator.
