English chair honored as Faculty of the Year

Jackson, Tenn. - Barbara McMillin was honored Monday, May 10, as Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University's 1999 Faculty Member of the Year.

Dr. Barbara McMillinMcMillin, who is the chair of the department of English and associate professor of English, joined the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ faculty in 1992. Before coming to Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, McMillin taught at Northeast Mississippi Community College, Blue Mountain College and the University of Mississippi.

McMillin is a graduate of Northeast Mississippi Community College with an associate of arts. She graduated from Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with a bachelor of arts in English and received her master of arts and doctor of arts in English from the University of Mississippi.

McMillin has recently submitted a paper for publication in the Tennessee Philological Association Bulletin, titled \ldblquote Lost in Time: An Analysis of Narrative Technique in "The Garden of Folking Paths" and "A Rose for Emily."

The faculty of the year award is presented annually as a joint venture involving the Student Government Association (SGA) and the university's faculty. The criteria for the award are (1) classroom/laboratory/studio teaching, (2) faculty professional development activities, (3) off-campus community activities, (4) on-campus and local church religious activities and (5) extra-curricular student activities.

The student and faculty bodies each nominate four faculty members for consideration. The nominees are given to a selection committee composed of two faculty members, two students and one administrator to make the final selection based upon the information provided by each of the candidates.

The award carries a stipend by the university and a plaque given by the SGA.

McMillin, her husband Larry and son Samuel belong to Poplar Heights Baptist Church of Jackson, where she is a Sunday school teacher for adult ladies.
