Brooks named new head women's soccer coach at Â鶹ÊÓƵ

Isaac Brooks has been named the new head coach for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ University women's soccer team. Brooks has served as the assistant women's soccer coach for the last six seasons. He will take over the new position effective immediately.

"We feel very fortunate to have Isaac as head coach for women's soccer at Â鶹ÊÓƵ University," says Dr. Jerry Tidwell, Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Senior Vice President for University Relations. "Isaac is a man of faith, who has a great capacity for teaching the game of soccer. He served as assistant coach for six years before assuming the head coach position. He now takes over a solidly built, successful women's soccer program. We believe Isaac is the right coach to prepare our girls to compete at the NCAA II level."

Brooks joined the women's soccer program in their second season of varsity competition in 2006. During his six years as assistant coach, the women's soccer program finished in the top half of the conference every season. The program is coming off their best regular season finish as they earned a TranSouth Regular Season Co-Championship, posting a 12-3-2 overall record and 5-0-1 record in league play.

"I feel that God has called me to spread His word through soccer, so it is an absolute honor to be able to coach for a school that supports me in that mission", Brooks said. "I could not pick a better school than Â鶹ÊÓƵ and I am extremely thankful to Dr. Dockery, Dr. Tidwell and Tommy Sadler for giving me this opportunity. I am truly blessed. Coach Boylan has created an amazing program and we will continue that tradition of excellence."

Brooks played three years of soccer at Â鶹ÊÓƵ University during the early years of the men's program from 1999-2002.

In the spring of 2007, Brooks led his club team, the '91 Lady Flyers, to the Division III State Title in just his first season with the team. In 2009, Jackson Lady Flyers club team was a finalist in the girls under 18 DII state championship. He is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), in which he has a soccer coaching diploma. In 2008, Brooks was selected to be a board member for the Jackson Area Wide Soccer (JAWS) organization. Brooks serves as the Director of Coaching for JAWS. He has served in the past as the General Manager and Director of Coaching for the Tennessee Rush Soccer Club.

Brooks, a native of Ridgetop, Tenn., graduated from Â鶹ÊÓƵ in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in Christian Ministries and Recreation. In May of 2011, Brooks completed his M.A.Ed with an emphasis in sports administration. He has worked for the Memphis Athletic Ministries. Brooks has also spent time as a coach for the Chicago Eagles and a counselor for Young Life at Camp Trail West in Buena Vista, Colorado.

Brooks is the son Greg and Naomi Brooks, both of Ridgetop, Tenn. He and his wife, Sarah Ryan Brooks, were married on May 2, 2009 and welcomed their first child, Elsie, on July 5, 2011 .

Â鶹ÊÓƵ promotes Sinclair to head trainer position

Karen Tankersley Sinclair has been promoted from assistant athletic trainer to the position of head athletic trainer for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ University athletic programs. Sinclair served as the assistant trainer at Â鶹ÊÓƵ for the past two seasons.

Sinclair says, "I am honored and delighted by my promotion to serve as Head Athletic Trainer for Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Athletics. With Â鶹ÊÓƵ's move into NCAA DII, the future for the athletic program is very bright; and I am excited to be in a position in which I can serve the student-athletes by enabling them to perform to their highest athletic ability. My goal is to not only contribute to the success of the student-athletes in the competitive athletic setting, but more importantly to influence their lives for God's glory."

The position became available when Kristy Johnson, Â鶹ÊÓƵ's head trainer for the past five seasons, accepted the same position at her alma mater, Southern Oregon University.

"We wish Kristy Johnson great success in her new role at Southern Oregon", said Senior Vice President for University Relations, Jerry Tidwell, "But we are thrilled to have Karen willing and well prepared to move into the head trainer position. Karen's preparation at Southern Mississippi and work experience at places like Southern Methodist (Texas) and North Carolina should serve as wonderful preludes to continuing to build a top-level athletic training program here at Â鶹ÊÓƵ University."

Sinclair, a native of Covington, Tennessee, who began her work at Â鶹ÊÓƵ in the fall of 2009, had already become a member of the National Athletic Trainer Association and Board of Certification in March of 2006. She is also certified as a Performance Enhancement Specialist by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Before coming to Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Sinclair worked as staff assistant athletic trainer at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 2008-2009. Her primary responsibilities there were to work with women's volleyball, women's track and field and cross country.

Sinclair earned a Master of Arts in Exercise and Sports Science with specialization in athletic training from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She completed her thesis on kinematics of the scapula and shoulder complex in overhead athletics. While at North Carolina, her clinical responsibilities as a graduate assistant included working with men's lacrosse, women's volleyball and fencing teams. Sinclair also served as an instructor in undergraduate anatomy labs and physical education classes.

Sinclair received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2005, where she graduated cum laude. She was a four-year varsity letter winner as a member of the Southern Mississippi cross country and track and field teams.

Sinclair was married to her husband Scott on June 17, 2011.

It took nearly 87 minutes, but the Â鶹ÊÓƵ University women's soccer team final hit the back of the net to earn a 1-0 win over a determined Cumberland University squad in the TranSouth Tournament semifinals. Â鶹ÊÓƵ improved to 12-2-2 on the season, while Cumberland ends their season at 10-8.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ head coach Brandon Boylan says, "I thought we played well tonight. I am really pleased that we were able to keep the pressure on them. Mentally, we stayed with it and did not let our early misses get to us. We kept creating chances and eventually got one in."

With the win, Â鶹ÊÓƵ advances to the conference tournament championship game for the first time in program history (2005 was inaugural season). Â鶹ÊÓƵ will face top-seeded Martin Methodist, who is ranked No. 6 in the NAIA. Â鶹ÊÓƵ tied Martin Methodist earlier this season in their regular season meeting in Pulaski 2-2. Both teams earned the co-championship for the regular season with 5-0-1 league records. The title game will take place Friday, November 11 at 3:00 p.m. in Pulaski.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ out shot Cumberland 15-4 in the first half, including 8-1 in shots on goal but neither team was able to score. The second half continued with Â鶹ÊÓƵ dominating the ball possession and shots. Â鶹ÊÓƵ out shot Cumberland 11-1 in the second half, including 4-0 in shots on goal.

However, after several missed opportunities from Â鶹ÊÓƵ, senior Eboni Murphy took a pass from another senior, Christina Reardon, and found the back of the net at the 86:25 mark. Â鶹ÊÓƵ controlled the ball for the final three minutes to seal the win. Murphy fired eight shots on the night with Ashlie Watson shooting six times.

Emily Warren recorded one save and gained her ninth shutout of the season as her defense kept Cumberland away from the box most of the night. Elizabeth Surdam recorded nine saves in a great effort for Cumberland.

In the latest rankings released today, Â鶹ÊÓƵ moved up in the receiving votes category from receiving one vote to receiving 15 votes.
