Â鶹ÊÓƵ promotes Sinclair to head trainer position

Karen Tankersley Sinclair has been promoted from assistant athletic trainer to the position of head athletic trainer for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ University athletic programs. Sinclair served as the assistant trainer at Â鶹ÊÓƵ for the past two seasons.

Sinclair says, "I am honored and delighted by my promotion to serve as Head Athletic Trainer for Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Athletics. With Â鶹ÊÓƵ's move into NCAA DII, the future for the athletic program is very bright; and I am excited to be in a position in which I can serve the student-athletes by enabling them to perform to their highest athletic ability. My goal is to not only contribute to the success of the student-athletes in the competitive athletic setting, but more importantly to influence their lives for God's glory."

The position became available when Kristy Johnson, Â鶹ÊÓƵ's head trainer for the past five seasons, accepted the same position at her alma mater, Southern Oregon University.

"We wish Kristy Johnson great success in her new role at Southern Oregon", said Senior Vice President for University Relations, Jerry Tidwell, "But we are thrilled to have Karen willing and well prepared to move into the head trainer position. Karen's preparation at Southern Mississippi and work experience at places like Southern Methodist (Texas) and North Carolina should serve as wonderful preludes to continuing to build a top-level athletic training program here at Â鶹ÊÓƵ University."

Sinclair, a native of Covington, Tennessee, who began her work at Â鶹ÊÓƵ in the fall of 2009, had already become a member of the National Athletic Trainer Association and Board of Certification in March of 2006. She is also certified as a Performance Enhancement Specialist by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Before coming to Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Sinclair worked as staff assistant athletic trainer at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 2008-2009. Her primary responsibilities there were to work with women's volleyball, women's track and field and cross country.

Sinclair earned a Master of Arts in Exercise and Sports Science with specialization in athletic training from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She completed her thesis on kinematics of the scapula and shoulder complex in overhead athletics. While at North Carolina, her clinical responsibilities as a graduate assistant included working with men's lacrosse, women's volleyball and fencing teams. Sinclair also served as an instructor in undergraduate anatomy labs and physical education classes.

Sinclair received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2005, where she graduated cum laude. She was a four-year varsity letter winner as a member of the Southern Mississippi cross country and track and field teams.

Sinclair was married to her husband Scott on June 17, 2011.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ University has once again been named to the "http://www.championsofcharacter.org/article/39.php"&rt;NAIA's Champions of Character list released Wednesday. Â鶹ÊÓƵ also joins with all members of the TranSouth Conference to earn this award, making the TranSouth one of only four conference with all members being named to the list.

When it comes to advancing character-driven intercollegiate athletics, NAIA members are making the grade, according to results of the 2010-11 NAIA Champions of Character Scorecard released today by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The Association, which boasts a proud reputation as an arena that promotes competitive athletics, academic excellence and character values simultaneously, will recognize 220 colleges and universities and 23 conferences with the Champions of Character Five Star Award. To receive the award members scored 60 or more points on the NAIA Champions of Character Scorecard and conferences named to the list had at least 60% of its member schools making the grade with 60 or more points.

"In today's complex college athletic environments – where success is sometimes only measured by wins and losses – strengthening effective athletic departments and leadership is key to advancing character-driven intercollegiate athletics," said Kristin Gillette, NAIA Director of Champions of Character. "The Scorecard supports and recognizes member institutions and conferences using sport as a vehicle to teach life lessons. No doubt this is a point of differentiation in college athletics and making a huge impact on our 60,000 student-athletes."

The Scorecard was crafted to convert the NAIA's vision and strategy into measurable goals and to monitor progress towards advancing character-driven intercollegiate athletics. The initiative supports performance-driven athletics while defining expectations and standards that drive successful teams and athletics departments.

Institutions were measured based on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earned points in each of the following categories: character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by obtaining zero ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.

Over 80% of member institutions and all member conferences were named to the Five Star list. Colleges and universities landing in the top five spots include Cornerstone (Mich.) with 103 points, Montana Tech of the University of Montana with 97 points, Shawnee State (Ohio) with 94 points, Biola (Calif.) and Xavier (La.) each with 91 points and Oklahoma City and Saint Thomas Houston (Texas) rounding out the top five with 89 points apiece. The Appalachian, Frontier, Gulf Coast and TranSouth Conferences landed in the top spot with 100% of its member schools making the grade.

Five Star Award recipients will be recognized on the NAIA Champions of Character website, and receive a special web banner and certificate noting the honor. Presidents, athletics directors and conference commissioners at award winning colleges, universities or conferences also will be recognized at the 71st Annual NAIA National Convention in April.

The Scorecard process is based on the NAIA's flagship program Champions of Character, which emphasizes the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
