Â鶹ÊÓƵ softball takes first loss of pool play, shutout for first time in 91 games

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University softball team fell 3-0 to Indiana University-Southeast in the second day of play in Pool E of the NAIA Softball National Championships. Â鶹ÊÓƵ goes to 1-1 in pool play and the loss eliminates Â鶹ÊÓƵ from advancing to Monday's bracket.

This was Â鶹ÊÓƵ's 57th game of the season and was the first time all year that Â鶹ÊÓƵ was held scoreless. This 3-0 loss snapped a 91-game streak for Â鶹ÊÓƵ without being shutout. The last shutout was a 7-0 loss at William Carey (Miss.) March 19, 2011. This sets a new Â鶹ÊÓƵ record for consecutive games without being shutout. The old record of 50 games happened during the 2001 season. That season, Â鶹ÊÓƵ posted their best national tournament result with a third place finish and a 63-8 record.

Indiana-Southeast, the four-seed in the pool, posted their second straight upset as they knocked off top seeded Lubbock Christian (Texas) Thursday. Indiana-Southeast has clinched a spot as the Pool E Champion in Monday's final bracket.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ's offense that had been so good all season was held in check by Kayle Duke (16-6) as she tossed a complete game, 3-hit shutout. Â鶹ÊÓƵ did not record their first hit of the game until the bottom of the sixth. Â鶹ÊÓƵ left two runners on base in each the sixth and seventh innings.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ's Kelly Robey (19-5) took the loss, allowing two runs in the first inning. She tossed two innings, allowing the two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Brooke Thomas tossed the final five innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits.

Tobie Joy recorded Â鶹ÊÓƵ's first hit, while Katie Davis and Jenyce Spence added late singles.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ (46-11) will face Lubbock Christian Saturday in the final game of the pool play. This will be the final game for both teams.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ puts three on Capital One Academic All-District baseball/softball teams

The "http://cosida.com/news.aspx?id=3658"&rt;2012 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball and Softball teams have been released. Â鶹ÊÓƵ University had three players to earn the votes of district CoSIDA members. Danny Grimm was selected to the District-4 College Division baseball team, while softball players Katie Beth Fesmire and Stephanie Saunders where named to the district softball team.

Grimm, a senior shortstop and former University School of Jackson standout, just helped lead Â鶹ÊÓƵ to their second straight TranSouth Tournament title. Grimm has won three tournament titles in four seasons at Â鶹ÊÓƵ and as helped his team advance to four straight NAIA National Championships Opening Round. He has been a four-year starter and was recently named first team all-conference and a Rawlings Gold Glove winner for the second straight season.

Fesmire, a sophomore catcher and also a former USJ standout, helped her team to their seventh TranSouth Regular Season Title and first since 2004. The softball team is currently participating in the conference tournament as the top-seed.

Saunders, a junior first baseman from Ashland City, was recently named first team all-conference for the second straight season. Her play at the plate and in the field is a key factor in Â鶹ÊÓƵ's return to the top of the softball conference.

The 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball and Softball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America® teams programs in 2011.

The Academic All-District teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the first year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moves from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and doubles the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. For baseball and softball, only First Team All-District teams were selected, so each member listed above continues on to the national ballot.

The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.

The No. 11 Â鶹ÊÓƵ University softball team posted a double-header sweep over Cumberland University Saturday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Â鶹ÊÓƵ took game one 5-3 and then won the second game 3-2. Â鶹ÊÓƵ improved to 35-8 on the season and 21-3 in the TranSouth. Cumberland dropped to 24-16-1 overall and 14-10-1 in league play.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ tied the game when Katie Davis singled to score Alex Williams. A wild throw in from the outfield allowed Sanders to scored and give Â鶹ÊÓƵ the lead. Caroline George (3-0) earned the win in relief as she tossed the final three innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Thomas started the game, going four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
