JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/22/2007 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldog softball team posted a sweep over TranSouth Conference foe Crichton College (Tenn.) on Thursday evening, winning the first game 11-3 and the second 3-2. With the wins, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 18-4 on the season and 11-1 in the TranSouth. Crichton dropped to 2-18 overall and 1-6 in league play.
A split looked to be in order for the night as Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out in the inning, Ashley Walters singled up the middle to keep Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's hope alive. Walters had already doubled and homered in the game for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's only run. Brandy Hoffman, hitting third in the lineup, stepped to the plate and drove a high fly ball over the centerfield fence to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ the 3-2 win. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ managed just five hits in the game, with Walters going 3-for-4 and Hoffman and Kristen Kirk recorded the other hits.
Henderson native Bethany Burnett improved to 4-1 on the season with her seven innings pitched. She allowed two runs on six hits while striking out 11 batters, including six of the last seven she faced in the game.
Game one was all Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ as the Lady Bulldogs posted at least one run in all six innings played, including four in the bottom of the sixth to end by way of the run-rule. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Michelle Albonetti with three hits and Mandy Elder with two hits. Four other Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ players recorded a hit each. Freshman Brighton native Haley Lyles (4-0) tossed six innings, allowing six hits and three runs with a strikeout and a walk.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA National Rankings, will travel to No. 6 Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.) on Saturday for a double-header beginning at 4:00 pm.
