JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/24/2007 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldogs are the 2007 TranSouth Conference women's basketball regular season championships after defeating Martin Methodist College 72-65 on Saturday in the final regular season game of the year. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finished the regular season 24-5 overall and 15-3 in the conference.
This regular season title marks the 10th in the past 12 seasons, including a co-championship in 2004. For head coach Mark Campbell, this is his sixth in eight years.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and Martin Methodist went back and forth during the first half with Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ leading by as many as five points. Martin Methodist, however, posted their biggest lead of the game at the half, leading 32-28.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ opened with a 9-0 run to take a five point lead. Martin Methodist answered back to take a three point lead, but couldn't hold on. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ re-took the lead and began to pull away leading by as many as 10 points in the game, 70-60, before posting a 72-65 win.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ started the conference season 0-2, but close the season by winnning 15 of their past 16 games.
With the regular season title, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ earns the No. 1 seed in next week's TranSouth Tournament which means home court advantage as long as the Lady Bulldog are live.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's first conference tournament game will be on Wednesday night, February 28 at 7:00 pm in quarterfinal action. The Semifinals are on Friday, March 2 at 7:00 pm, and the championship game is Monday, March 5 at 7:00 pm.
