Â鶹ÊÓƵ Tops Trevecca Nazarene in Top-25 Battle

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/3/2007 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University men’s basketball team posted their second straight win with an 82-75 win over Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon. Â鶹ÊÓƵ, ranked No.22 in the latest NAIA rankings, improved to 15-7 on the season and 8-3 in league play. The nineteenth ranked Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 14-9 overall and 7-4 in league play.

Both teams swapped quick baskets to start the game for what was the first of only two ties in the game. Over the first 10 minutes of play, Â鶹ÊÓƵ stretched the lead to 26-16 for their biggest lead of the game. Trevecca Nazarene mounted a rally over the next five minutes with a 17-7 run to tie the game at 33-33 with 4:26 left in the first half. Â鶹ÊÓƵ, who never trailed in the game, answered back to take a 38-35 lead into the break.

The second half saw Trevecca Nazarene score first to cut the lead to one, but Â鶹ÊÓƵ was again able to answer. Â鶹ÊÓƵ jumped out to a five point lead and the teams then swapped baskets over the several minutes of play, until Â鶹ÊÓƵ was able to build a nine-point advantage, 58-49 with 9:12 left to play. Â鶹ÊÓƵ held a nine-point lead twice in the second half, both times being capped off by a three pointer from sophomore guard Alan North. But as expected in game with two top NAIA teams, Trevecca Nazarene answered back and cut the Â鶹ÊÓƵ lead to just four points, 76-72, with 1:13 left to play. Â鶹ÊÓƵ immediately responded when Bolivar native Brian Lake was fouled as he sank a three pointer with 39 seconds left to give Â鶹ÊÓƵ a seven point lead. Lake would miss the free throw, however, Â鶹ÊÓƵ connected on three of four free throws in the final 22 seconds to help seal the 82-75 win.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ shot 45-percent from the field, including 46-percent from behind the arc. The Bulldogs were led by Mack Bealim with 18 points, including 11 in the first half. Pierry Valmera and Tony Brown added 15 points each, while North scored 13 points in the game including 3-of-3 shooting from behind the arc. Deywane Lee, the conference’s leader in rebounds and NAIA’s No. 8 rebounder, grabbed a game-high 16 boards.

Trevecca Nazarene was led by Collins Onyando with a game-high 19 points. Onyando completed his double-double with 11 rebounds. Josh Helton scored 16 points, Brian Odour added 15 points, and Rick James tallied 14 points. The Trojans shot 52% from the field and 25-percent (3-12) from behind the arc.

Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a road game at Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, Kentucky on Thursday, February 8 at 9:00 pm.
