Â鶹ÊÓƵ Ladies Win Seventh Straight Game with Win over Martin Methodist

JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/27/2007 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Lady Bulldogs defeated Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) 74-58 on Saturday to post their seventh straight win. With the win, No. 8 Â鶹ÊÓƵ improved to 16-4 on the season and 7-2 in league play. Martin Methodist dropped to 15-6 overall and 5-4 in league play.

The women’s game started slow as neither team scored for almost three minutes of play. Martin Methodist’s Shontel Johnson finally broke the drought with a basket at the 17:18 mark to give the RedHawks a 2-0 lead. However, Â鶹ÊÓƵ started to heat up as they posted a 26-14 run over the next 10 minutes of play to take a 26-14 lead. A very game RedHawk team however, rallied back and cut the Â鶹ÊÓƵ lead to four points with just over five minutes left in the half. But it was Â鶹ÊÓƵ who scored 11 of the final 14 points of the half to take a 38-26 halftime lead.

In the second half, Â鶹ÊÓƵ continued the hot shooting as the Lady Bulldogs pulled out to their biggest lead of 29 points, 74-45 with 3:27 left in the game. A late surge by Martin Methodist saw the RedHawks score the game’s final 13 points and they hold Â鶹ÊÓƵ scoreless over the final 3:27 of the game. However, Â鶹ÊÓƵ had already done the damage as the Lady Bulldogs came away with a 74-58 win to maintain a share of the TranSouth lead.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ was led by Kaitlin Dudley with 18 points. Natanya Smith added 15 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Josephine Owino scored 12 points and Crystal Eason added 11 points. Â鶹ÊÓƵ again shot well from the three point line, making 7-of-15 (47-percent).

Martin Methodist was led by Shontel Johnson with 15 points. Whitney Robinson added 14 points, while Diane Frost scored 12 points for the RedHawks.

Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a home game versus No. 12 Cumberland University (Tenn.) on Thursday, February 1 at 6:00 pm.
