Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Wins Second Consecutive NCCAA National Championship

Marion, Ind. - 4/26/2002 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldog Softball team won the 2002 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship. The Lady Bulldogs defeated NCAA Div. 1 opponent Gardner-Webb 2-1 in the finals to win their second consecutive national title.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the semifinal game earlier in the day over NAIA No. 21 Olivet Nazarene 2-1. Amy Mejia had two hits and scored on an RBI single by junior catcher Megan Quarry. The one run was enough for Rachel Murray who pitched a two-hit shutout to win her 23 game of the season to only three losses. In the championship game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got two hits apiece from Brandi Park and Rachel Murray. Christina French added a double to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded, two outs and one run already in for Gardner-Webb, Leah Gronberg struck out the final out of the game to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ the title. Gronberg’s record in now 21-3 on the season.

Lady Bulldogs dominated the awards as Rachel Murray was named the NCCAA Player of the Year for the third consecutive year. Amy Mejia was named the national tournament MVP. Making NCCAA All-American were Murray, Mejia, and Gronberg. Brandi Park and Megan Quarry were selected as All-American honorable mentioned. Being named to the all-tournament team were Murray, Mejia, Gronberg, and Quarry. Head Coach Brian Dunn was named the NCCAA Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improves their overall record to 44-5 and will move now the NAIA postseason. The Lady Bulldogs are hoping to bring home the NAIA National Championship this season, as they fell just one game short last season. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be the No. 1 seed in next weeks TranSouth Conference Tournament that will be played in Cleveland, Tenn.
