No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Rallies to Defeat No. 16 Oklahoma Baptist 70-66

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/17/2006 - In day two of the 13th Annual Rotary Classic, the topped ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Lady Bulldogs used a strong final five minutes to come from behind and earn a 70-66 win over No. 16 Oklahoma Baptist University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 5-0 with the win, while Oklahoma Baptist falls to 1-3, with all three losses coming to ranked teams.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot just 39-percent from the field in the first half, and just 3-of-10 from behind the arc. At one point in the first half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as nine points, 25-16, at the 8:59 mark. However, Oklahoma Baptist closed out the half with a 22-7 run to take a a 38-32 halftime lead.

In the second half, Oklahoma Baptist held the lead for 13 minutes but couldn't extend the lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took their first lead of the second half, 58-57, at the 7:34 mark. The next six minutes would be back and fourth. However, with 1:18 left in the game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the lead for good on a basket by DJ Sissoko to make the score 66-64. After both teams swapped baskets, a lay-in by Sissoko with 10 seconds left sealed the win for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Josephine Owino with 19 points and Kaitlin Dudley with 18 points. Every player for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored, but no one else tallied double figures. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 44-percent from the field, including 33-percent (5-15) from behind the arc.

Oklahoma Baptist was led by Jennifer Jupin with 17 points. Rachel Heins added 16 points and Lena Brenning scored 12 points. Betsy Simmons grabbed 11 rebounds. The Bison shot 43-percent from the field, including 33-percent (6-18) from behind the arc.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be the showcase game of the season in NAIA Basketball to this point. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and Vanguard University (Calif.) currently share the top spot in the NAIA rankings and the two teams will meet at 9:00 pm at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ on Saturday night in the final game of the 13th Annual Jackson Rotary Classic.
