No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Tops No. 5 Houston Baptist 81-64

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/7/2006 - Top ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University posted a big win over No. 5 ranked Houston Baptist University (Texas) at Fred DeLay Gymnasium on Tuesday night, 81-64. With the win, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 2-0 on the season while Houston Baptist fell to 1-1 overall.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped out to a quick 15-4 lead in the game and held an 11 point advantage for most of the first 10 minutes of play. However, a Houston Baptist run pulled the Huskies to within four points at 32-28. But then Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ posted a 17-3 run to close out the first half to take a 49-31 lead into the half. In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ cruised to the 81-64 win.

Five players scored double figures for the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Lady Bulldogs led by Natanya Smith with 20 points and eight rebounds. Josephine Owino added 18 points, Merideth Richardson scored 13 points, Kaitlin Dudley added 13 points, and Jessica Graves scored 11 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ made 8-of-20 three pointers (.400).

Houston Baptist was led by Jacquelyn Overby with a game-high 25 points off the bench, including 7-of-11 three pointers. Jasmine Irving added 20 points and Jelela Simpson added 10 rebounds. The Huskies shot 40 percent from the field including 33 percent (8-24) from behind the arc.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be their second game out of five in a row versus teams ranked in the top 18 of the NAIA. On Saturday, November 11, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ plays in Cleveland, Tennessee at No. 8 Lee University at 5 pm central time.
