Â鶹ÊÓƵ Men Win Battle of NAIA Top-20 Teams

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/4/2006 - The No. 5 ranked Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to defeated No. 18 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) 83-65. Â鶹ÊÓƵ is now 1-0 on the year and Olivet starts the season 0-1.

In a back and forth first half, Â鶹ÊÓƵ pulled out to a five point lead going into the final minute of play in the first half. However, a short 5-0 run by Olivet Nazarene was capped off when Micah Lavender sank a shot just across half court to tie the game at 39-39 going into the break.

The second half started in much the same way with neither team able to distance themselves. However, Â鶹ÊÓƵ was slowly able to put some separation between them and Olivet Nazarene with the help of back-to-back threes by Ryan Merriman and Tony Brown. Â鶹ÊÓƵ led by as many as 20 ponts in the second half and outscored the Tigers 44-26 in the final 20 minutes.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ was led by Pierry Valmera with 22 ponts. Tony Brown added 16 points, Mack Bealim scored 12 points, and Ben Frederick added 11 points. Bealim and Deywane Lee led with 12 and 10 rebounds respectively. Â鶹ÊÓƵ made 7-of-10 three pointers (.389), including 5-of-10 in the second half.

Olivet Nazarene was led by Micah Lavender and Phil French with 15 each. Stan Chismark added 14 points while Ryan Pazson scored 11 points. The Tigers shot 41-percent from the field and 42-percent (8-19) from three point range.

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ men play next in the McKendree College Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 10-11 in Lebanon, Illinois.
