Â鶹ÊÓƵ Softball Opens TranSouth Play With Sweep of Cumberland

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/31/2006 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Lady Bulldog softball team won their fifth game in a row with a sweep over Cumberland University (Tenn.), 1-0 and 4-0 on Friday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Â鶹ÊÓƵ improved to 23-9 overall and 2-0 to start league play. Cumberland drops to 7-12-1 on the season and 0-6 in the TranSouth.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ scattered eight hits in game one, but only tallied one run of offense. However, behind the pitching performance of senior Mary Kosco, that one run was good enough for the win. Kosco (7-3) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out five batters. Â鶹ÊÓƵ's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Holly Haycraft led off with a single. She then stole second and advance to third on a single by Candace Cross. Kylie Sullivan drove in Haycraft with a perfectly placed squeeze bunt. Cross went 3-for-3 and Jessica Kee went 2-for-3 on the day to lead Â鶹ÊÓƵ.

In game two, Â鶹ÊÓƵ used the long ball along with a second good pitching performance. Jackie Cliff (6-5) tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out six batters. In the bottom of the third inning, Â鶹ÊÓƵ broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer by freshman Kristen Kirk. For Kirk, a native of Bolivar, Tennessee, this was her second home run of the season and 10th RBI. Danielle Pope sent her fourth long ball of the season over the center field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning to put Â鶹ÊÓƵ up 4-0. Pope was 2-for-2 while Amber Bryant went 3-for-3 in the nightcap.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ will play again on Tuesday, April 4 as they travel across town to play Lambuth University at 2 p.m. Â鶹ÊÓƵ swept the double-header earlier this year, 6-1 and 1-0.
