JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/30/2006 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University softball team posted two wins on Thursday night under the lights at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's Fesmire Field. The Lady Bulldogs swept the Cougars of Mid-Continent University (Ky.) 5-0 and 8-7. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 21-9 on the season while Mid-Continent fell to 14-10 overall.
In the first game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ used a combined two-hit performance by Jackie Cliff and Bethany Burnett to post the 5-0 win. Cliff (5-4)tossed five innings allowing just two hits while striking out four batters. Burnett tossed two innings of perfect relief including three strikeouts. Offensively, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by former Jackson Christian School standout Jessica Kee. Kee went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Michelle Albonetti added two RBI in her 1-for-3 performance.
Game two proved to be much for eventful for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mid-Continent tied the game with a run each in the top of the second and third innings. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added a run in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. To this point in the game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's senior first baseman Danielle Pope has all three of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's RBI.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then added another run in the bottom of the four inning as Kee led off with her fourth home run of the season. However, Mid-Continent answered right back on a three-run home run by Kim Erickson to give the Cougars a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered with two more runs started by a two-out RBI single by Bolivar's Kristen Kirk. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held the slim 6-5 lead going into the seventh and final inning of play. Burnett came in to relieve Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ starter Chrissa Norton. Mid-Continent promptly took the lead with two runs, one of which was unearned. However, like they had done twice already in this game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered Mid-Continent's scoring. Kylie Sullivan led off with a walk, Pope laced her fourth hit of the game to center field. Norton, then doubled to drive in Sullivan to tie the game. After a walk to Kirk, Kee then flied out to shallow right field. Pope, the runner on third base, bluffed going home and returned to third, however, a wild throw back to the infield by Mid-Continent's right fielder allowed Pope to cross the plate for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's winning run.
Pope went 4-for-4 with three RBI and one run in the game. Sullivan added a 2-for-3 night with three runs scored. Despite losing the lead for a brief moment, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's Burnett earned the win to improved to 4-1 on the season.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will open TranSouth Conference play on Friday, March 31 at home with Cumberland University (Tenn.) comes to Fesmire Field for a 3 p.m. double header.
