Humboldt Connection Leads Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Baseball in Sweep Versus Spalding

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/4/2006 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Bulldog baseball team finished a three game weekend sweep of Spalding University (Ky.) with a last inning rally in the final game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the first game of the day 10-0 and won the second game of the double-header 4-3. In both games, the offensive heroes were former Humboldt High School teammates Jud Poweres and James Brasfield.

The Bulldogs defeated Spalding on Friday night 4-0. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved their record to 11-6 on the season and have won nine of their last 10 games.

On the day, Powers and Brasfield combined to go 10-for-14 at the plate with a combined six RBI and four runs. Brasfield recorded teh game-winning hit and earned the win in Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's 4-3 win in the second game.

Garrett Pepper put also put together an impressive weekend as he earned a win on the mound Friday night with a complete game, nine inning shutout. Pepper also went 4-for-10 at the plate with five RBI in the three games.

In the first game of the day, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ struck early and often on their way to a 10-0 win that ended after five innings. Sophomore pitcher Ben Ayris tossed all five innings allowing just four hits and no runs. This marked the second straight complete game shutout for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ starters (Garrett Pepper 9 innings in 4-0 win on Friday). Humboldt native Jud Powers led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with a 3-for-4 day with four RBI and two runs scored. Kyle Yates (Jackson), Garrett Pepper (Memphis), James Brasfield (Humboldt), and Jason Cooper (Kansas) each tallied two hits on the day.

Game two for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ featured much more excitement. Spalding scored their first run of the series with a tally in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tied the game in the bottom of the third with a double by Jeffrey Jackson and an RBI single by Powers. Spalding answered with one run in each the top fourth and fifth innings to lead 3-1. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed by that same score in the bottom of the seventh when Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ loaded the bases with just one out. Garrett Pepper, Friday night's offensive and pitching hero, stepped to the plate and tied the game with a two-RBI double down the left field line. This was Pepper's second two-RBI double in as many days. With first base open and only one out, Spalding walked Andrew Maddox to pitch to James Brasfield. Brasfield promtly slaps a solid single back up the middle for the game-winning RBI as Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won 4-3. Brasfield (4-0) also pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his 4th win of the season.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a match up with NCAA Div. II power and fourth ranked Delta State University (Miss.) on Tuesday, March 7 starting at 4:00 pm at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's Fesmire Field.
