JACKSON, Tenn. - 12/15/2005 - , a native of Covington, has signed to play his college baseball for the Bulldogs of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University. Mathis will join Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in the fall of 2006 after his graduation in May from Covington High School.
Mathis, a 6-foot 185 lb. pitcher, is currently a senior at Covington High School were he plays baseball and football. He has played the last three seasons of baseball for former Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Bulldog standout, Geno Miller. Mathis was a part of both the 2003 football and 2004 baseball state runner-up teams. In baseball as a sophomore and junior, he was named All-District, All-Region, All-Shelby Metro, and All-State. As a sophomore he was named the Best of the West Player of the Year as he posted a 12-1 record with a 1.14 ERA. Mathis added TACA Player of the Year as a junior while posting an 11-1 record with a 1.08 ERA. His totals for his sophomore and junior season were 145 inning pitched, 193 strikeouts, and just 25 walks. In football, Mathis was named All-Region for special teams. Off the field, Mathis was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and #1 Club.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's head baseball coach Brent Fronabarger says of Mathis, "We are lucky to have signed him. He's been recruited by several schools already in his high school career." Fronabarger adds, "Tyler could be our No. 1 or No. 2 starter next season as a freshman. He's a great competitor with an above average fastball and good off-speed pitches. Tyler is a great early signing for us here at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ."
