Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Lady Bulldogs Win TranSouth Tournament Championship

Jackson, Tenn. - 3/4/2002 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldogs won the TranSouth Conference Tournament Championship by defeating Trevecca Nazarene 88-81. This championship is the seventh conference championship in a row for the Lady Bulldogs.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Christal Merriweather led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with a triple-double on the night. She tallied 31 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists. Merriweather also broke Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s school record for free throws made in a game with as she went 16-18 from the line. Allison Harrison added 22 points and Jessica Henson scored 14 on the evening. On the game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 88% (28-32) from the free throw line, which helped seal the victory for the Lady Bulldogs. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improves their record to 32-3 on the season.

Leading Trevecca (23-8) was Charity Williams with a double-double as she scored 14 points and tallied 11 rebounds. Jennifer Wilson and Lindsey Fly each scored 18 points for the Lady Trojans while Ashley Boykin added 12 points.

The 2002 All-TranSouth Tournament Team and Tournament MVP was announced following the game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Christal Merriweather was named the tournament MVP for her heroic performance in the championship game. Making the team along with Merriweather was Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Allison Harrison, Trevecca’s Charity Williams and Jennifer Wilson, Freed-Hardeman’s Melody Saxon, and Lee’s Courtney Hindman.

Both Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and Trevecca will play in the NAIA National Tournament here in Jackson on March 13 through March 19.
