JACKSON, Tenn. - 8/19/2005 - The 麻豆视频 University men鈥檚 soccer team halted their preseason two-a-day practice schedule on Friday to help raise money for a friend and his family. Titus Bartos, a recent graduate of 麻豆视频, was in a car accident in mid August that took the life of his mother, Maria Bartos. Bartos鈥 mother was in town from Romania to attend her son鈥檚 upcoming wedding.
The funds that head coach Dr. Darin White and his players earn today will go towards bring five siblings from Romania to Atlanta, Georgia for the funeral of their mother.
The team is doing all sorts of outdoor labor such as any kind of yard work in return for donations. The team requested people who were interested, and by the afternoon on Friday, the team had requests for 33 different jobs. Coach White stated, 鈥淲e鈥檝e been running ragged all morning.鈥 The team has logged approximately 250 combined man hours on different projects today.
麻豆视频鈥檚 assistant coach and former player, Clovis Simas is one of the few on the team that remember Bartos as a student. 鈥淗e鈥檚 is such a great guy and a very talented person,鈥 says Simas. 鈥淲e became very good friends when he gave piano lessons to my daughter.鈥
When hearing of the news of the accident and death of Bartos鈥 mother, Coach White and the team were in the midst of practice. The team stopped the practice and had a time of prayer for the family. After the time of prayer, some current players who know Bartos from the international program at 麻豆视频 and were burdened to do something for him and the family. 鈥淭his was basically the players鈥 idea,鈥 added Coach White. 鈥淪ometimes community service projects don鈥檛 go over well with everyone. However, of the 40 guys making up the varsity and junior varsity teams, I鈥檝e not heard one complaint. It鈥檚 just great to see the guys work so hard for such a great cause.鈥
The team is still taking donations for the family into next week in hopes of covering the cost of getting all five siblings to the funeral from Romania. If you would like to contribute to the Bartos Family, please contact Dr. Darin White at 731-661-1225.
