Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Baseball Completes a Perfect Weekend In The Sports Plus Classic

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/26/2005 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Baseball team completed a three game sweep through the Sports Plus Rehab Classic. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ defeated Huntington College (Ind.) on Saturday 15-1 in the final game. On Thursday, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ topped McKendree College (Ill.) 5-4 and then defeated Missouri Baptist University in a classic battle on Friday, 1-0. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 7-7 on the season with their current three game winning streak.

The Bulldogs had be struggling offensively during this season as their team average dropped to .214. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ started the season with out Jason Johnson, Zach Lowery, and Garrett Pepper who accounted for 88 RBI in 2004. However, Saturday's action helped improve their team average 30 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tallied 15 runs in the game, a season high, with help from a 7-run first inning and a 6-run sixth inning. Every starter for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tallied at least one hit and all but two starters recorded at least one RBI. Jud Powers of Humboldt and Josh Allen of Jackson led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with three hits each. Steve Sweat of Lexington led the way with three RBI including a two-run homer in the fourth inning, his first of the year. Zach Lowery came off the bench to pinch-hit in the six inning and record a hit in his first swing of the season. Lowery has missed the first part of the season recovering from a broken thumb.

Freshman Humboldt native James Brasfield continued his excelent pitching thus far, with 6.0 innings allowing eight hits and just one run. He tallied three strikeouts and walked just one. With this effort, Brasfield improved to 2-2 on the season with a 2.45 ERA. Josh Moss, Matt Gibbs, and John Mark Walls, each record an out in the perfect seventh inning.
