Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Volleyball Wins TranSouth Conference Championship; Wandera Named Tournament MVP

HENDERSON, Tenn. - 11/12/2004 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University volleyball earned the 2004 TranSouth Conference Championship on Saturday as they defeated Freed-Hardeman 3-0 (30-22, 30-28, 30-19) in the title match. Earlier in the day, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ defeated Freed-Hardeman 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-28) in the winners bracket championship to propel the Lady Bulldogs to the championship match. On the season, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 27-3 as they continued their perfect record against TranSouth by going 10-0 during the regular season, and then sweeping through the tournament unbeaten.

This title for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is the second TranSouth Tournament championship (1999, 2004) in Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s seven-year history of the volleyball program.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ had three players make the TranSouth Conference All-Tournament team. Gladys Wandera, Phylis Anyango, and Tedy Georgieva each received the honor. Also, Wandera was named the tournament’s MVP.

Wandera, a 6-foot-2 middle hitter from Kenya, leads the TranSouth Conference with a .464 hitting percentage and aces with 63. She is second in the conference with 5.9 kills per game. She was named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Week five times, the NAIA Region XI Player of the Week four times, and the NAIA National Player of the Week once. Anyango, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter form Kenya, ranks fourth in the conference in both hitting percentage (.418) and kills per game (4.9). Georgieva, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Bulgeria, ranks seventh in the conference with a .292 hitting percentage and ninth with a 3.3 kills per game.

Up next for the 12th ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Lady Bulldogs will be the NAIA Region XI Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19th and 20th in Louisville, Ky.
