Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's Men Hold On to Defeat Tougaloo 67-59

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/9/2004 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Bulldogs held off a very determined Tougaloo College (Miss.) team to earn a win. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, ranked No. 16 in the nation, improved to 2-1 on the year as Tougaloo falls to 2-1 overall.

Tougaloo jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game. After a timeout, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ came out and played much better for the remaining 16 minutes of the first half. After falling down 8-0, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ outscored Tougaloo 34-12 to take a 34-20 halftime lead. In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ open the second frame with a 6-0 run to put the lead at 20. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stretched the lead to 23 points at three difference occacions during the second half. Tougaloo cut the lead down to nine points with just over one minute remaining in the game as Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held on for the 67-58 win.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by sophomore Ben Frederick with a game-high 26 points. Frederick was 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Corey Burkett tallied a double-double for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Burkett made 4-of-9 three pointers in the game. For Tougaloo, Dennis Holder led with 19 points, while Derrick Smith and Ellito Adams tallied 14 and 12 points respectively.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ plays next on Friday when they travel to play in the Hannibal LaGrange Tournament. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will play Culver-Stockton on Friday at 4 pm and then play Hannibal-LaGrange on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
