JACKSON, Tenn. - 8/12/2004 - Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University senior standout, , is playing in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. For Wandera, this is her second straight Olympic games as member of the Kenya National Volleyball Team (2000 in Sydney).
Including Wandera, the Kenya National Team has three players who are currently playing college volleyball for American schools (Phelister Chebet – Indian Hills Junior College; Roselida Obunaga – Central Methodist; and Gladys Wandera – Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ).
Kenya will be playing in Group A during the first rounds of competition. Other teams included in Group A will be former world champions Brazil, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and the host team Greece. Kenya’s match schedule for the first round is Aug. 14 versus Greece, Aug. 16 versus Brazil, Aug. 18 versus Italy, and Aug. 22 versus Japan.
Wandera, a 6-foot-2 middle hitter for the Lady Bulldogs is from Kakamega, Kenya. Last season as a junior at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, she received the TranSouth Player of the Year honor, the NAIA Region XI Player of the Year honor, and was named an NAIA All-American. She was named as the conference player of the week five times, region player of the week three times, and NAIA National player of the Week twice during the season. Wandera, a junior for the Lady Bulldogs, led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in kills (905), kills per game (5.69), and attack percentage (.518). In the TranSouth, she ranks first in attack percentage while ranking second in kills and kills per game.
