JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/3/2004 - For the second time in as many weeks and third time this season, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University senior guard has been named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Week. Abakwue helped lead Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to a 2-0 record to improve their overall record to 24-6. The Bulldogs currently sit at 10-2 in the TranSouth Conference standings, just one game behind leader Cumberland (11-1). Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ has clinched at least a second place finish in the regular season. However, the Bulldogs have two regular season games remaining, at Lyon College on Thursday and at home versus Cumberland on Saturday, with the chance to overtake Cumberland for the top spot.
Abakwue, a 5-11 Senior from Cedar Hill, Texas, helped the Bulldogs past two TranSouth Conference opponents this week - Martin Methodist and Freed-Hardeman. In the win over Martin Methodist, Abakwue scored 33 points while adding four rebounds, three assists and three steals. In the win over Freed-Hardeman, he had a tallied 14 points. He also added three rebounds, two steals, and one assists. On the week, Abakwue averaged 23.5 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, 2.0 assists per game and 2.5 steals per game. He shot 14-of-28 (50%) from the field, 9-of-21 from beyond the arc and 10-of-11 (90.9%) from the free throw line.
Abakwue leads the TranSouth Conference and ranks second in the NAIA with 122 three pointers made (4.07 per game). On the season, he is leading Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with 18.0 points per game. He is shooting .440 (122-277) from behind the arc.
The Bulldogs are now 24-6 on the season and are in second place in the TranSouth Conference with a record of 10-2.
