GULF SHORES, Ala. - 5/18/2012 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University softball team fell 3-0 to Indiana University-Southeast in the second day of play in Pool E of the NAIA Softball National Championships. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ goes to 1-1 in pool play and the loss eliminates Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ from advancing to Monday’s bracket.
This was Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's 57th game of the season and was the first time all year that Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was held scoreless. This 3-0 loss snapped a 91-game streak for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ without being shutout. The last shutout was a 7-0 loss at William Carey (Miss.) March 19, 2011. This sets a new Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ record for consecutive games without being shutout. The old record of 50 games happened during the 2001 season. That season, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ posted their best national tournament result with a third place finish and a 63-8 record.
Indiana-Southeast, the four-seed in the pool, posted their second straight upset as they knocked off top seeded Lubbock Christian (Texas) Thursday. Indiana-Southeast has clinched a spot as the Pool E Champion in Monday’s final bracket.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s offense that had been so good all season was held in check by Kayle Duke (16-6) as she tossed a complete game, 3-hit shutout. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ did not record their first hit of the game until the bottom of the sixth. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ left two runners on base in each the sixth and seventh innings.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Kelly Robey (19-5) took the loss, allowing two runs in the first inning. She tossed two innings, allowing the two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Brooke Thomas tossed the final five innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits.
Tobie Joy recorded Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s first hit, while Katie Davis and Jenyce Spence added late singles.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (46-11) will face Lubbock Christian Saturday in the final game of the pool play. This will be the final game for both teams.
