Kelly Robey

PULASKI, Tenn. - 4/10/2012 - The No. 11 Â鶹ÊÓƵ University softball team posted a double-header split at Martin Methodist College. Â鶹ÊÓƵ dropped the first game 10-4, but then responded to take the second game 6-2. Â鶹ÊÓƵ is 31-8 on the season and 17-3 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA rankings, is 25-15 overall and 9-7 in league play.

Freshman pitcher Kelly Robey (14-2) was called on in game two to make sure the Lady Bulldogs came away with the split. She did so with a complete game, two-hitter, allowing two runs and striking out four batters. Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s offense helped the cause, staking Robey to a 3-0 lead after scoring three times in the top of the second inning. Â鶹ÊÓƵ added three single runs in each the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Martin Methodist scored one run in each the fourth and fifth. The RedHawks got as close as 3-1 and 4-2, before Â鶹ÊÓƵ tacked on insurance in the later innings. Â鶹ÊÓƵ was led by Alex Williams with two hits in the game, with four other players recording one hit each. Jenyce Spence led with two RBI.

In the first game, Martin Methodist came out swinging as they scored three runs in the first, two in the second, and four more in the third to lead 9-0. The game seemed to be heading for a run-rule, however the resilient Â鶹ÊÓƵ team started a comeback. Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, coming up short in the rally, but forcing the game to go the distance. Brooke Thomas (15-6) took the loss, allowing 10 runs, nine earned on 14 hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. Caroline George tossed the last inning, allowing just one hit and striking out a hitter in her inning of relief. Â鶹ÊÓƵ recorded seven hits in the game, all from seven different players. Katie Davis led with two RBI.
