Jackson, Tenn. - 7/24/2003 - Two Â鶹ÊÓƵ University soccer players have enjoyed success during this past off season as they have been playing in summer tournaments. Senior captain of British Columbia, Canada and junior captain of Rio, Brazil each played large rolls in their teams’ championships.
McDiarmid played for the Canadian Men’s team in the British Columbia World Cup of Soccer. His penalty kick goal in overtime helped lead his team to an overtime win against Scotland to earn the championship. McDiarmid has been a starting midfielder for Â鶹ÊÓƵ in each of his three seasons as a Bulldog. He was a big part in leading Â鶹ÊÓƵ to their first ever TranSouth Tournament Championship game in 2001. That season, Â鶹ÊÓƵ finished runner-up in the conference to Berry College.
Simas, also a starting midfielder, will be a junior this season for the Bulldogs. Simas has just recently played in the USSF Futsal National Championship in Anaheim, California. In the men’s open division, Simas helped lead his team to the national championship. In the five games played in the tournament, he tallied seven total goals. Simas joined Â鶹ÊÓƵ last season as a sophomore and started every game for the Bulldogs. He recorded nine goals, nine assists, and 27 total points, each of which was good enough for second on Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s squad last season.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ head coach, Dr. Darin White is exited about their off-seasons and hopes their success and leadership will transfer to Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s upcoming season. Both of these players have been named team captains for the 2003 year. Their leadership will be greatly needed as Â鶹ÊÓƵ will have 16 freshmen joining the team this season. Coach White believes that this is his best recruiting class at Â鶹ÊÓƵ in terms of the number of talented players he’s brought in.
Some high expectations await this new look Bulldog soccer squad. With only two seniors, and three juniors, a lot will be cast on young players to help Â鶹ÊÓƵ compete in the TranSouth in hopes of earning a spot in the NAIA post season tournaments.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ will play an exhibition game on August 22 at home versus the Memphis United Men’s team at 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs’ season opener will be August 25 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas versus Ouachita Baptist University at 2:00 p.m. Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s home opener will be September 5 at 4:30 p.m. versus Brewton-Parker College.
