JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/28/2012 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University baseball team posted a double-header split at home Wednesday afternoon versus Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the first game 11-10 and then fell 7-3 in the second game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is now 17-12 on the season, while Harris-Stowe is 15-20.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 6-1 after the first inning and seemed to be cruising to a victory. However, Harris-Stowe scored six runs in the fourth to take the lead back. The game was back and forth over the next few innings with Harris-Stowe leading 10-9 going into the bottom of the seventh. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s RJ Rayborn singled and his pinch runner, Wacey Russell, scored on a triple by Clint Barnes to tie the game. Barnes scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly from Brett Pawlan. Cody Dew (8-0) earned the win in relief, allowing no runs on two hits in the final 1.1 innings of work. Four Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pitchers threw in the game. Pawlen and Rayborn led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with three hits each. Barnes and Doug Joyce led with two RBI each. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pounded out 16 hits in the game. Harris-Stowe’s Josh Mendoza led with two hits and five-RBI in the game, including a 3-run home run.
In game two, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led again after one full inning, this time 2-1. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 3-1 after four innings, but Harris-Stowe scored six unanswered runs. The Hornets scored four times in the fifth to take the lead with the help of a 3-run home run from Blake Dirnberger. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ had just four hits in the game, and scored twice on a wild pitches. John Read (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in five innings of work. Eric Estes (1-0) earned the win in relief for Harris-Stowe.
This weekend’s schedule for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ baseball versus Cumberland has been adjusted. The double-header is now scheduled for Friday at 4:00 p.m., with the single game Saturday at noon.
