JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/28/2012 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University baseball team fell to the William Carey (Miss.) University Crusaders Tuesday afternoon 10-7. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped to 16-11-1 overall, while William Carey improved to 19-14.
In the first inning William Carey took advantage of two errors to score four runs in the top half of the inning. Then in the second inning Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered back. The first run came across when a Clint Barnes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Then Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tied the game off of shortstop Danny Grimm’s base clearing double.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the third inning when the starting pitcher for William Carey, Michael Coelho, walked the bases loaded. The new pitcher, Ernie Triplett walked in the next run to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ a one run lead.
Then in the fifth inning William Carey scored four more runs including a three run homerun by Javier Ortiz. This knocked starting Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pitcher Benji Fesmire (2-3) out of the game giving up seven earned runs in five innings of work. David Leisey tossed two innings in relief for Fesmire, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-6 of off a sacrifice fly by Doug Joyce. But in the top of eighth William Carey scored two more runs off of Cody Dew who tossed the final two innings for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored one more run in the bottom of the eighth but could come no closer. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Clint Barnes with two hits. Danny Grimm led with three RBI, while Barnes drove in two runs. William Carey’s Ernie Triplett, Quin Stokes, and Ronald Camacho had three hits each. Javier Ortiz led with three RBI
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s next game is a double-header at Fesmire Field against Harris-Stowe (Mo.) University Wednesday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. Then it is a weekend series against TranSouth opponent Cumberland University Friday and Saturday at Fesmire Field.
