Pitching, long ball propels No. 17 麻豆视频 softball in sweep of Freed-Hardeman

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/13/2012 - The No. 17 麻豆视频 University softball posted a double-header sweep over Freed-Hardeman University Tuesday evening at 麻豆视频鈥檚 Fesmire Field. 麻豆视频 won both games by the score of 2-0. 麻豆视频 improved to 19-4 overall and 8-0 in the TranSouth. Freed-Hardeman dropped to 8-11 on the season and 2-4 in league play.

麻豆视频 pitchers, Brooke Thomas in game one and Kelly Robey in game two, combined to pitch 14 innings on the day. The duo allowed no runs, just five total hits, and struck out 23 batters combined.

麻豆视频鈥檚 Thomas (9-3), the reigning NAIA and TranSouth Pitcher of the Week, dominated game one in the circle with 10 strikeouts, just three hits allowed in her seven inning shutout. Tiffany Tucker (2-6) started for Freed-Hardeman, allowing just two runs on six hits and two strikeouts. 麻豆视频鈥檚 offense game in the form of a solo home run from Shelby Lamb in the fourth inning. 麻豆视频 tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single from Jenyce Spence.

The second game was much like the first, featuring two solid pitching performances. 麻豆视频鈥檚 Robey (8-1) struck out 13 batters in her complete game shutout, allowing just three hits. Robey struck out the side in the first, second and fourth innings. Sarah Cousar (4-3) allowed just two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in her complete game. The two runs for 麻豆视频 came in the fourth inning. Stephanie Saunders singled with one out, followed by a two-run home run from Spence.

Spence led 麻豆视频 on the day with two hits, a home run and three of the team鈥檚 four RBI. Saunders led with two hits in game two, while Lamb had two hits in game one.

Up next for 麻豆视频 will be four games in the William Carey (Miss.) Classic this weekend, March 16-17 in Hattiesburg, Miss.
