No. 17 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ softball gets two wins on first day of classic

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/9/2012 - The No. 17 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University softball team posted wins in both of their games in the first day of the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Softball Classic. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ defeated Davenport (Mich.) University 10-2 and then knocked off No. 21 Columbia (Mo.) College 5-1 in the final game of the day. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 15-4 on the season.

Other action from Friday’s game including No. 24 Saint Xavier (Ill.) defeating Davenport 5-4, Columbia defeating Midway (Ky.) 8-0, and Saint Xavier defeating Midway 7-3.

In Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s first game, the Lady Bulldogs scored quick with four runs in the first. Jenyce Spence did most of the damage on a 3-run home run. Davenport rallied with two runs in the third, but Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored in the third, added four more in the fifth to lead 9-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Keaton Kirk led off the inning with a first pitch homer to walk-off with a run-rule victory for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.

Kelly Robey (7-1) tossed a complete game allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts. Stephanie Saunders led the way with a 3-for-3 day. Shelby Lamb and Katie Davis added two hits each with Spence leading the way with her three RBI.

Game two of the day for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning versus No. 21 Columbia. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ produced their third 4-run-inning of the day in the bottom of the fourth. Lamb led off with a home run. Alex Williams and Kirk later doubled, accounting for the other three RBI in the frame. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added another run in the fifth and then Columbia spoiled the shutout with a tally in the seventh.

Brooke Thomas (7-3) allowed four hits in seven innings of work, with one run and nine strikeouts. Williams was 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will face Midway at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a 5:00 p.m. game versus St. Xavier to close out the classic.
