JACKSON, Miss. - 3/6/2012 - The No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University baseball team posted a 5-2 win at Belhaven (Miss.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 10-3-1 overall, while Belhaven dropped to 15-9.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pounded out 17 hits in the game, scoring just five runs, including three in the top of the ninth get the win. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ left 15 runners on base in the game.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took a 2-0 lead after a run in the fourth and one more in the fifth inning. Jim Martin’s sacrifice fly scored Doug Joyce, who doubled earlier in the fourth. In the fifth, Brett Pawlan’s RBI single drove in Kian Jost.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ until the bottom of the eighth inning. Belhaven scored first on a squeeze bunt, then added a run to tie the game on a single from Hamilton Harper.
In the top of the ninth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ responded with three runs on five hits. Two more RBI for Martin on a single did the damage. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added a final run on a throwing error.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ used four pitchers in the game. John Reed tossed the first two innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. Jacob Alexander pitched the next 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts. Benjie Fesmire tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing no runs and no hits. Cody Dew (5-0) entered the game in the seventh inning. Dew tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits but earning the win after Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored the 3 runs in the ninth.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Joyce and Martin with three hits each. Martin had three RBI. Jost, Cole McAdams, Pawlen, and RJ Rayborn each added two hits.
Belhaven’s Harper and Kyle Wheeler each had two hits. Five Blazer pitchers appeared in the game with Alan McHenry (1-1) taking the loss in relief. He allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will remain in Jackson, Miss. and play at Tougaloo Wednesday afternoon.
