JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/28/2012 - The No. 2 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University women’s basketball team defeated Blue Mountain (Miss.) College 80-47 Tuesday night. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 29-2 on the season, while Blue Mountain ends their season at 4-24.
The win for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was their 13 straight on the season and was also their 39th straight home victory. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ advances to the semifinals of the TranSouth Conference Tournament Friday, March 2. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will face Bethel at 7:00 p.m.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first with a basket from Lavanda Ross to start the game. However, Blue Mountain scored the next seven points and then pushed their lead to as many as nine points, 17-8, with 13:21 left in the half.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then responded with an 11-0 run regain the lead at 19-17. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed again at 22-21 with 7:03 left in the half, but then closed the half with a 14-2 run to lead 35-24 at the break.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as 36 points before taking the 80-47 final.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by the TranSouth Newcomer of the Year, Shelby Ashcraft with 22 points, a new career high at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. Mildred Olumasi scored 12 points while Ross added 10 points. Rebecca Sharpe dished out 10 assists in the game, and scored nine points, all coming on three consecutive 3-pointers on three straight Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ possessions in the second half. Emily Sissom added nine points on three 3-pointers. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 41 percent from the field, 29 percent (9-31) from long range, and 83 percent (15-18) from the free throw line.
Blue Mountain was led by Jessi Hayles with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Amber Johnson added 13 points. The Lady Toppers shot 30 percent from the field, 23 percent (5-22) from behind the arc, and 74 percent (1-19) from the free throw line.
