No. 17 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ softball sweeps Mid-Continent to open TranSouth play

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/27/2012 - TranSouth Conference play opened for No. 17 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University softball with a double-header sweep over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the first game 6-0 and rallied in game two for a 6-5. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the TranSouth. Mid-Continent dropped to 3-3 on the season and 0-2 in league play.

Brooke Thomas followed up her no-hitter from Saturday with a one-hitter in today’s win over Mid-Continent in game one. Thomas (3-1) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just the one hit with 11 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of work. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored in the second, third and fifth innings, with the big inning coming with a 3-spot in the fifth. Katie Davis, DeShuni Sanders and Alex Williams led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with two hits each. Davis and Williams each added two RBI. Stephanie Sauders and Katie Beth Fesmire recoded one RBI each. Lindsey Tucker (1-1) from Mid-Continent allowed six runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out none in her six innings of work. Molly Hargrove of the Cougars recorded the only hit in the game, a bunt single in the fourth.

In the second game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was down 5-3 when lead-off hitter Toby Joy reached on an error. After two straight ground outs, Joy stood at third with two outs. Davis singled to drive in Joy. Natalie Neal pinch ran for Davis and advanced to third on a double by Saunders. Shelby Lamb came up with runners on second and third and Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailing 5-4. Lamb promptly singled to right-center field to driving in Neal and Saunders for the win. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first in the game with a run in the first inning. Mid-Continent took the lead 3-1 in the fourth. Mid-Continent led 3-2 after four innings, 4-3 after five innings, and then 5-3 after the top of the seventh. Kelly Robey started for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, going 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Caroline George (1-0) tossed 3.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts to earn the win. Davis was 4-for-4 in the game with three RBI. She pushed her totals for the day to 6-for-7 with five RBI. Saunders was 3-for-3, while Lamb had two hits and two RBI in the game. Hargrove (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Cougars, allowing five runs, two earned on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a road conference double-header Wednesday at Lyon (Ark.) starting at 1:00 p.m.
