Pair of rallies lift No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in sweep of No. 25 Taylor

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/25/2012 - The No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University baseball team completed a double-header sweep over No. 25 Taylor (Ind.) University Saturday at Fesmire Field. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the first game 6-4 and then took the second game 6-5. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won 3-of-4 games from Taylor on the weekend to improved to 8-2 on the season. Taylor is now 2-4 on the year.

In the first game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed 2-0 before scoring single runs in the second and third to tie the game at 2-2. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed again after Taylor scored twice in the top of the fifth inning. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added a run in the bottom of the fifth, then scored three times in the sixth to take the 6-4 lead. Cole McAdams tripled in the third and scored on a ground out by Kian Jost to tie the game at 2-2. The big inning came in the sixth when Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ did their work with two outs. After the first two batters were retired, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ recorded three straight hits, capped by a 2-RBI triple from Brett Pawlen. Pawlen then scored on a wild pitch. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Pawlen with two hits and two RBI. Six other Bulldogs recorded one hit each.

After Colin Hatch lasted just one inning, allowing two runs on two hits with four walks, Benji Fesmire (2-0) entered in relief for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. The junior tossed five innings, allowing two hits and two runs with three strike outs as he earned the win. Senior Cody Dew (2) earned the save with a perfect top of the seventh with one strike out.

Ryne Otis led the Trojans with two hits, while Jordan Coffey was tops with two RBI. Josh DeGraff (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs in one inning of work.

The second game was another back-and-forth battle. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored twice in the third on a 2-RBI double from McAdams. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tied the game at 2-2 after Taylor had scored two unearned runs in the second inning. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got three more runs in the third. Will Irvin and Kian Jost recorded RBI singles, while RJ Rayborn earned an RBI thanks to a bases loaded walk. After Taylor tied the game 5-5 with three runs in the sixth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter, Jim Martin reached on a error. Jacob Alexander entered as a pinch runner for Martin. Clint Barnes executed a sacrifice bunt to move Alexander to third. Danny Grimm then doubled to left field, scoring Alexander for the win.

Grimm, Pawlen, Irvin, McAdams, and Jost each recorded two hits. Doug Joyce was 1-for-1 but had three walks in the game to reach base all four times. McAdams led with two RBI.

John Reed started for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, going 5.1 innings, allowing five runs, three earned on four hits with four strike outs. Dew entered the game with one out in the sixth and the bases loaded. The three inherited runners scored but no more. Dew (3-0) earned the win, allowing no runs on two hits with two strike outs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Josh DeGraff (0-2) took his second loss of the day, allowing just the one run in 2.1 innings of relief work in the second game. Otis led the Trojans with two hits.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be road game Tuesday, February 28 at Christian Brothers in Memphis. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
