JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/24/2012 - The No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University baseball team split a Friday double-header with No. 25 Taylor (Ind.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the first game 1-0, but fell 8-3 in nine innings in the second game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is now 6-2 on the season, while Taylor sits at 2-2. The same two teams will face off in another double-header Saturday starting at noon at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Fesmire Field.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the opener behind a complete game shutout victory from Will Irvin (2-0). Irving tossed seven innings, allowing just four hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Irvin’s opponent, Travis Tomaszewski (0-2) was almost as solid in the loss, allowing one run on seven hits with one strikeout. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored their run in the bottom of the second and Irvin made it hold up. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ recorded three straight singles by Kian Jost, Cole McAdams and RJ Rayborn to start the second.
In the second game, the two teams scattered three one-run innings each for the first seven innings. Taylor scored in the second, followed by a union tally in the second. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the lead with a run in the fourth, followed by a run from Taylor in the fifth. Taylor took the lead in the sixth on an unearned run. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extras. In the seventh, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ hit into a double play and left the winning run stranded at third.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ a chance to take a lead in the fifth with runners on first and third and nobody out. However, Taylor relief pitcher Drew Flatford got a strikeout, pop-out and ground out to end the threat. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got two hits from Clint Barns and one RBI each from Barnes, McAdams and Rayborn. Taylor scored five in the top of the ninth, three of the runs coming on a 3-run blast from Jordan Coffey. Jared Davis tossed six innings in the start, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits with five strikeouts. David Leisey (0-1) took the loss, tossing three innings in relief and giving up the five runs in his final frame of work. Leisey allowed six hits with four strikeouts. Taylor Luna earned the win in relief for Taylor, tossing four innings, with three hits, one run and two strikeouts.
