No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ completes weekend sweep of No. 15 Missouri Baptist

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/18/2012 - The No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University baseball team posted a double-header sweep Saturday at Fesmire Field over No. 15 Missouri Baptist University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the first game 6-5 and then took the second game 4-3. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ also won the Friday game versus Missouri Baptist 4-3. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 3-1 on the season, while Missouri Baptist dropped to 1-4 overall.

In the first game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 4-1 going in the final frame. However, the Spartans of Missouri Baptist scored four times to take a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 4-3 with two outs, before a throwing error led to two runs crossing the plate. In the bottom of the inning, Kody Pinson walked with one out. Pinch-runner Wacey Russell then stole second and scored to tie the game on a double by Will Irvin. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ kept pressing and with still just one out, had loaded the bases. RJ Rayborn hit a slow roller down the first base line that scored Irvin to win the game.

Clint Barns and Irvin, both players from Bolivar, Tenn., led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with two hits each. Barnes and Rayborn led with two RBI each. Colin Hatch pitched well, but earned a no-decision. Hatch allowed two hits and one run with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Cody Dew tossed three innings, the first two of which were scoreless before running into trouble in the top of the seventh. Dew earned the win (1-0), allowing four hits, four runs, two earned with one strikeout in three innings.

The second game started with Missouri Baptist taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered with a run in the bottom of the second, before the Spartans regained the lead with a tally in the top of the third. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Doug Joyce did the damage in the fourth with a two-RBI single with two outs. In the fifth, Jim Martin recorded an RBI on a ground out that score Cole McAdams in what proved to be the winning run. Joyce then came in to pitch in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing just one run on one hits with one strikeout to earn the save. John Reed (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a recently added game to the schedule. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will host Rust (Miss.) Tuesday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m.
