No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ splits opening two games Friday

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/17/2012 - The No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University baseball team split their first two games of the season Friday at Fesmire Field. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ started the day with a 4-3 win over No. 15 Missouri Baptist University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then closed out the day with a 2-1 loss to Campbellsville (Ky.) University. The middle game of the afternoon was Campbellsville defeating Missouri Baptist 5-3.

In the first game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rode the strong pitching of Will Irvin (1-0), who tossed six innings, allowing three hits, two runs, one earned run and had two strikeouts. Senior Cody Dew earned the save by tossing the final inning. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got two hits from senior Clint Barnes, including two runs and one RBI. Doug Joyce posted two RBI with his one hit in the fifth that proved to be the game-winning runs. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored a run in the first on back-to-back doubles by Barns and Brett Pawlen. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then added three runs in the fifth. Missouri Baptist scored single runs in the third, fifth, and seventh.

The second game proved to be a pitchers dual between Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Jared Davis (0-1) and Campbellsville’s Ryan Richardson (1-0). Richardson tossed the complete game, allowing just one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Davis tossed six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Jacob Alexander for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tossed a perfect top of the seventh inning. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got one hit each from Pawlan, Kody Pinson, and RJ Rayborn. The lone RBI came from Joyce on a sack fly in the fourth to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ a 1-0 lead. Campbellsville answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the win.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a double-header versus Missouri Baptist, Saturday morning starting at 10:30 a.m.
