Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ men’s basketball falls in double overtime, 87-79

MAYFIELD, Ky. - 2/16/2012 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University men’s basketball team lost in double overtime 87-79 at Mid-Continent (Ky.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lost their third straight game, falling to 16-12 on the season and 9-5 in the TranSouth. Mid-Continent (8-18, 7-6) won for the seventh time in their last nine games.

Mid-Continent jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead to start the game. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered to tie the game at 7-7. Mid-Continent regained the lead and held a small advantage until Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tied the game again at 22-22 with just under six minutes left in the first half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ outscored Mid-Continent 10-2 over the final five minutes to take a 30-24 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Mid-Continent started hot again, posting a 15-9 run to tie the game at 39-39. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ maintained a small lead and with just over eight minutes left, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 49-47. Mid-Continent then posted a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 57-49. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered and with 1:47 left, Anthony Freeman, Jr. tied the game at 61-61. Then down by two points with 35 seconds left, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s David Lane tied the game with two free throws, 63-63. Mid-Continent missed a three pointer and two shots off offensive rebounds that would have won the game.

In the first overtime period, Mid-Continent jumped up 68-65, but Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ responded again. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Lane again tied the game 71-71 with two free throws with 28 seconds left. Mid-Continent again missed two shots at the win in the final seconds, sending the game to a second overtime.

In the second overtime, the game was tied 75-75 with 3:22 left. Mid-Continent then converted a 5-point play when Marcus Johnson sank a three pointer, while Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ committed a foul away from the ball. Antonio Davis hit both free throws to put the Cougars up 80-75. Mid-Continent took over from there and pulled away for the 87-79 win.

This was the fourth overtime game of the season for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (1-3). It also marked the second straight overtime game in which Lane sank two free throws in the final seconds to send the game to the extra period (Feb. 9 at Lyon, a 78-72 overtime win for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ). This was also the first double-overtime game for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ since February 23, 2008, an 106-105 double overtime win at Crichton College.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Antony Freeman, Jr. with 19 points. David Lane added 16 points, Sam Danache scored 12 points, while Skyer Vaden and Leventric Gray added 10 points each. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 43 percent from the field, 19 percent (3-16) from 3-point range, and 70 percent (16-23) from the free throw line.

Mid-Continent was led by Chris Ferguson with game-highs of 26 points and 22 rebounds. Steve McBorrough added 16 points and Davis scored 11 points. The Cougars shot 36 percent from the field, 24 percent (5-21) from 3-point range, and 71 percent (22-31) from the free throw line.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be their final regular season home game, Saturday, February 18 versus Blue Mountain (Miss.) at 4:00 p.m. This will be senior day for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.
