JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/6/2012 - Former Â鶹ÊÓƵ University men’s basketball standout has been promoted to the professional basketball first league in Spain. The first league in Spain is considered the second best professional basketball league in the world behind the NBA.
Joseph earned a call up to replace an injured player on Spain’s Baloncesto Fuenlabrada on a temporary basis. However, his coach requested that Joseph remain on the team for at least the rest of the season. Joseph is playing against former NBA players including Adam Morrison, Carlos Arroyo, Pops Mensa and Dave Hawkins.
Current NBA stars including Ricky Rubio, Pau and Marc Casol, Rudy Fernandez and Serge Ibaka came to the NBA from the first league in Spain.
Joseph played on season at Â鶹ÊÓƵ in 2001-02 and was named the NAIA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year that season. Joseph also set the single season blocks record in all levels of basketball (NAIA and NCAA) with 242 blocks. He passed David Robinson’s mark of 207 blocks, which led all divisions at that time.
Joseph, a native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, led Â鶹ÊÓƵ with 22.4 points per game on the season. He also averaged team highs with 9.9 rebounds and 6.9 blocks per game. Joseph’s record setting block was highlighted on ESPN’s Sportscenter as a part of their Top-10 plays of the day. Joseph led Â鶹ÊÓƵ to the TranSouth Conference regular season and tournament titles. Â鶹ÊÓƵ also advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament in 2002.
In addition to being named the national player of the year, Joseph was a first team NAIA All-American, first team all-conference, TranSouth Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.
