HENDERSON, Tenn. - 1/14/2012 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University men’s basketball team defeated No. 18 Freed-Hardeman University 84-83 Saturday. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 10-7 on the season and 3-1 in the TranSouth. Freed-Hardeman dropped to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
The win for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was their sixth win in their past eight games. The only two losses in the past eight games were on the road to ranked teams. This win for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was the signature win that had eluded the Bulldogs this season until now. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is now 1-4 versus teams currently ranked in the top-25.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ controlled the lead for most of the first half, including all of the final 16 minutes. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as nine points late in the half, before going into the locker room up 37-30.
The second half started with the Lions out scoring Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ 10-2 to quickly pulled ahead, 40-39, in just under two minutes. The next 12 minutes was a back-and-fourth battle. With 7:11 left to play, the game was tied at 62-62. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Laventrice Gray scored two of his team-high 19 points to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ a lead held for the remainder. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as six points down the stretch, while Freed-Hardeman cut the deficit to just one point on two occasions. Daniel Gravatt pulled his team to within one point in the final minute. But Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ made 3-of-4 free throws in the final seconds to take a four point lead. The Lions got a three pointer at the buzzer to set the final at 84-83.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Gray led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Dani Marti added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Antoine Hall added 16 points and Skyler Vaden scored 14 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 48 percent from the field, 41 percent (9-22) from long range, and 71 percent (17-24) from the free throw line.
Freed-Hardeman was led by Kyle Teichmann with a game-high 27 points. Anthony Sampson added 14 points, Chandler Mack scored 11 points, and Jonathan Milewski scored 10 points. The Lions shot 35 percent from the field, 29 percent (10-34) from behind the arc, and 75 percent (15-20).
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home conference game Monday versus Mid-Continent at 8:00 p.m.
